The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers households in England and Wales £7,500 towards the installation costs of a renewable heating system such as an air source heat pump. This is part of the Government’s proposed target of reaching net zero emissions by 2050, aiming the scheme at households both on and off the gas grid. An additional £25 million of funding has been made available increasing the total Boiler Upgrade Scheme budget to £295 million. This is on top of the extra £30 million announced in November 2024.
You’re eligible for the scheme if both of the following are true. You must:
- own the property you’re applying for (including if it’s a business, a second home, or a property you rent out to tenants)
- be replacing fossil fuel heating systems – such as oil, gas, electric or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas)
You’re still eligible if you’ve already had funding to make your property more energy efficient, for example by insulating it. Your property must also have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC).
The Government is working with industries to match the cost of heat pumps to fossil fuel boilers by 2030 allowing homeowners to make the switch to low carbon heating systems without the burden of a hefty price tag.
How do I apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
We will help you with this. Here’s how it works:
- Contact us for your personalised quote
- We will take care of the grant application for you
- The £7,500 will be deducted from your installation costs
- We will install your heat pump via our network of installers
What does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is an ‘installer led scheme’, in the form of a grant voucher which we will apply for on your behalf. Once your new air source heat pump been installed, the grant amount will be deducted from your quote.
As heat pump installations can be more costly to install compared to traditional boilers, this can be a barrier for people looking to change or replace their boiler. As such, the boiler upgrade scheme makes it easier for homeowners to upgrade their heating system to a renewable system such as an air source heat pump.
What other finance options are available?
As well as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you can also apply for finance to pay the remaining balance. You can see an example cost calculation below.
